Word of the Day- October 18, 2018

overwhelm

i. (verb) have a strong emotional effect on

Sentence– Rohan was overwhelmed with shame when his teacher caught him cheating during the exam.

ii. (verb) bury or drown beneath a huge mass of something, especially water

Sentence– Floodwaters overwhelmed hundreds of houses, so many people died.

Questions:

  • Should a comma be used after the word ‘houses’ in the second sentence? Why or why not?
  • Does the word ‘overwhelmed’ remind you of a word recently featured on the blog? (Hint: ‘overwhelmed’ was used in the sentence of that word.)
  • If you have found that sentence, did the meaning become clearer today?

A1- I think a comma should be there after “houses” as another sentence is starting after that, instead of putting a full stop we put a comma.
A2- Yes, “overwhelm” remindes me of the word “earnest”.
A3- Yes ma’am the meaning is clear today.
