Children are exposed to gender roles sometimes in very obvious ways, but sometimes very subtly.
One of the subtle ways was the fairytales and story books we read while growing up where the girl was always the damsel in distress in need of being saved by a handsome and strong boy. Ugh! There were many other forms of unhealthy mindsets being promoted there, but that’s another topic of discussion.
How most of us grew up believing most of that nonsense without realising what it meant until we grew up! Unfortunately a substantial part of the society still believes in this.
Fortunately, with changing times, the books for children have been reviewed and the content challenges gender roles. Here’s a list of 20 such books for kids which can help parents and teachers with this.
